INSTRUCTIONS FOR GLASS HANDLING - TECHNICAL WARNINGS - PRODUCT INFORMATION

  • Glass walls next to passageways

    To avoid the risk of injuries caused by the outstanding transparency of the glass, it’s necessary to make them visible by using window stickers or decorations.

    It is not advisable to use dark colours on non-tempered glass exposed to sunlight due to the risk of breakage from thermal shock.

  • Planning

    To ensure the correct choice of glazing to be used, it’s essential that you provide us with the following information: area where the building is located, size of the building, number of supports for the glazing, dimensions of the glazing, its location within the facade or roof and the intended use.

    Remember to carry out an analysis of the possibilities of thermal shock.

  • Risk of breakage due to thermal shock

  • Opaque walls and curtains

    Glass located even partially in front of an opaque wall must be treated to ensure it can withstand thermal shock. Where interior curtains are present, ensure there is sufficient space between the glass and curtain to allow air circulation. 

    The minimum distance from the glass should be 40mm.

  • Installation

    Assembly must always be carried out using fixings and/or gaskets which ensure there is no contact between glass-glass, glass-metal, glass-concrete;


    Drainage

    To avoid damage to the waterproof seal of the insulating glass unit or deterioration of the interlayer of a laminated unit, it’s important that water doesn’t collect in the bottom of the groove upon which the glass unit rests.


    Fixing

    The peripheral and lateral support fixings upon which the glass is to be placed must be correctly positioned at the bottom groove of the window frame. The width of the fixings must be at least equal to the thickness of the glass itself.

  • On-site storage

    Prior to installation, glass sheets must be stored on trestles in a well-ventilated area, protected from bad weather and direct sunlight. Keep glass away from heat sources that could cause localised heating of the windows. Laminated products should not be subjected to prolonged temperatures above 60 °C. The same is true for glass with low-e or spectrally selective coating and coloured glass.

    All materials transported to the site for installation must be stored for the minimum time necessary for installation, and kept in a safe and sheltered place.

    The glass must be protected from rain and humidity (to protect from oxidation risk), from the sun (to protect from any risk of thermal shock), from dust, and from contact with harmful substances (cement, lime, welding sparks, etc.).

    All glass products (sheets, insulating panels, etc.) must be placed on a hard surface, usually vertically, slightly leaning and using suitable separating material (cardboard, paper, cloth, etc.) to avoid direct contact with the wall and between all glass sheets.

  • Maintenance

    The building owner must carry out correct and regular maintenance of the windows.

    This includes cleaning the windows, checking and repairing frames and joints where necessary, checking and unblocking drainage and ventilation holes, checking metal assembly and fixing components, and checking for any anomalies.

    The frequency of maintenance operations depends on the external environment and on the particular stresses to which the windows are subjected. In most circumstances, this should be carried out at least once a year.

  • Cleaning

    For washing, use clean, non-calcareous water or neutral, non-abrasive, and fluorine-free detergents. Immediately afterwards dry the entire surface of the windows. Make sure all washing equipment and clothes are free of abrasive particles.

    Frosted glass should preferably be cleaned with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, making sure to always wipe in the same direction.

    On untreated glass (and on glass with accessible coating) grease and oil stains should be removed with isopropyl alcohol or acetone. Try to avoid spreading the stain. Any solvent cleaning should be followed immediately by washing and rinsing with normal water.

    Tempered glass

    The tempering treatment can cause slight deformations of the glass surface that cause distortions to reflected images, but which are well within the requirements laid down by legislation.



    Wettability

    When the exterior surfaces of the glass are affected by condensation, rain, or cleaning water, fingerprints may emerge, such as those from rollers, labels, or suction cups. Wettability of glass is not a defect, but a physical property related to surface tension and the presence of moisture. It is a transitory phenomenon that disappears as the water evaporates.

    Windows, doors, other materials: general guidelines

    To assess the visual quality of materials, observation must be performed in diffused ambient light, in an upright, frontal position, from a distance of at least two meters. The areas to be observed must not be highlighted. Defects are not considered if they are not visible using the above-mentioned principles.

  • Protective films removal

    It is good practice to protect the product during construction work. For this reason, protective films are left in place when glass is delivered. However, this film can become difficult to remove, leading to potential damage of the product if left on for too long. It is therefore advisable to remove protective film within three months of delivery.

  • Properly ventilate

    Correct ventilation allows the continuous supply of “clean” air and the removal of impurities that accumulate in interiors. By ensuring correct ventilation, you avoid the formation of condensation and moulds. Just a few minutes of direct ventilation (two open windows facing each other) two or three times a day are enough to ensure ample air exchange without compromising comfort. The room temperature drops for a few minutes but the stored heat present in floors, walls, ceiling cools down only minimally and any temperature loss is recovered very quickly.

  • Condensation

    Under certain conditions, condensation can form on the glass surfaces on the outside of insulated glass units, on both the interior and exterior surface. In the case of insulating glass with high thermal insulation, condensation may temporarily form even on the external surface when the relative humidity of the air is very high and the temperature of the air itself is higher than the temperature of the glass surface. Large temperature differences may also cause ice to form temporarily.

  • On-site humidity

    During the construction and renovation of the building, excessive humidity may occur due to masonry, plastering and whitewashing works. Thorough ventilation is necessary to prevent wooden elements from absorbing humidity which may cause swelling and deformation of profiles and consequent damage to the corner joints, surfaces, and metal elements.
